Norman J. Alvord, 66, passed away peacefully on Monday (Oct. 7, 2013) at the Bath VA Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Alvord was born on May 19, 1947 in Wellsville to Kenneth B. and Marie O. (Leo) Alvord. He graduated in 1965 from Andover Central School and later served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. On Nov. 13, 1999, in Andover, he married Eileen F.Brown, who predeceased him on March 12, 2012.
Norman was a foreman for National Fuel in Wellsville for 38 years until his retirement in 2005.
Norm is survived by two sons, Kevin Alvord of Syracuse and William (Pam) Alvord of Denver, Colo.; three daughters, Cynthia (Joseph) Hudson of New Zealand, Tammy (Christopher) Golish of Spencerport and Bridget Helveston of Andover; three sisters, Corrine (Tom) Glass of Scio, Emily (William) Beyer of Falls Church, Va. and Mary (Rich) Bolero of Andover; two brothers, Leo G. (Patricia) Alvord of Wellsville and David “Mickey” (Joan) Alvord of Cumming, Ga.; six grandchildren, Kara (Andrew) Hudson with great grandchildren twins expected in December, Bella Puru, Brighton Quill, Miranda Golish, Bradley Golish and Maggie Helveston; and several nieces and nephews.
Norm was an avid fan of Western movies and fishing at Waneta Lake. He was a proud member of the Wellsville American Legion. He loved the holidays and spending time with family, especially the grandchildren. Even with the limitations of his many illnesses, he never missed the opportunity to attend his grandchildren’s special events and sporting activities.
Friends may call on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover. The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Fr. John Cornelius of the Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Andover.
