Velma Guild, age 91, formerly of Wellsville, passed from this life on Tuesday (December 8, 2020) at the Total Loving Care nursing home in New Caney, Texas surrounded by loving family.
Velma was born on July 31, 1929 in Hornell, NY the youngest daughter of William Barney Miller and Louise Marie (Roosa) Miller. She was born with beautiful red hair, a color which she kept well into her 80’s. Velma started school at Fulmer Valley School, later attended Allentown School, District 6 country school on Baldwin Rd., and graduated from Wellsville High School in 1946. She took a post graduate course at the high school and became a seamstress which was a life-long interest. On October 9, 1949 she married Howard Wesche and moved to the Herman Wesche farm in Belmont, where they built a new home. Shortly after their two sons Mark and Neil were born they purchased an adjacent farm closer to Belmont. After graduation Velma worked at the Wellsville glove factory for several years. In 1955 she became a substitute kindergarten teacher at Belmont Central School. During this time, she was president of the Belmont Parent-Teacher Association. She then worked for The Belmont Dispatch newspaper. In 1961 Velma took a Civil Service typing test, received top rating and started work with the Allegany County Board of Supervisors. In 1963 Velma started work as Account-Clerk Typist for the Allegany County Dept. of Highways which she performed for 19 years. She completed her 24-year career with the county working at the Treasurer’s Department until retirement in June of 1985. Later she worked part time for Amity Title Services, Monroe Abstract. Velma was a lifetime member of The Order of Eastern Star. She was Matron of the Belmont M. Eva Williams chapter in 1959, 1974 and 1975. In 1976 she became District Deputy Grand Matron representing the Allegany District. Velma became a member of the Catherine Schuyler Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1955. She was also a member of the Belmont Grange, the Scio Senior Citizen’s Sunshine Club, Allegany District Matron’s and Patron’s Club (O.E.S.). Velma regularly attended the Gospel Tabernacle Church and the Presbyterian Church of Wellsville. In her younger days, Velma liked to bike ride, run, roller skate and square dance. In later years she enjoyed playing cards, sewing and travel. In the winter months Velma and Howard Wesche would retreat to their home in Sarasota, Fla. returning each spring. Surviving Velma are sons Mark Wesche of Rochester, and Neil Wesche (Alyson) of Kingwood, Texas. Velma has three grandchildren, Katrina Dohse (Shea), Thomas Wesche (Deirdre Hall), and Alyssa Wesche, all from Kingwood, Texas. She has two great-grandchildren, Connor Dohse and Colton Dohse of Kingwood, Texas, several nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Velma is predeceased by parents William and Louise Miller, brother Myron Miller, and sister Elizabeth Burdick. She is also predeceased by her husband Howard Wesche, husband Howard Guild, and daughter-in-law Catie Stone-Ferraro. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Baker-Swan Funeral Home, 3256 Riverside Dr. in Wellsville. Viewing will be on Monday, January 4 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm with the funeral and graveside services immediately following.
