Richard Lewis Rogers passed away on the evening of March 16,2020 in Castle Rock, Co. He was 77 years old.
Richard was born on Dec. 3, 1942 in Indianapolis, Ind. to Clayton and Helen F. Rogers. Shortly after his birth the family relocated to western New York where he graduated from Greenwood High School. He grew up in Andover where he met and eventually married Cleona Jean Updyke. The two later relocated to Albuquerque, NM. There he was employed by The Albuquerque Door Co and later spent many years employed by Premier Builders for much of his career.
He later relocated to the Denver Metro area and spent his remaining years in Castle Rock, Colo. There he met and married his wife Laura.
Richard is survived by his wife of 15 years, Laura Walker Rogers; his son John D. (Scott P. Lawry) Rogers of San Diego, Calif.; his son’s mother Cleona Jean (Updyke) Blaser of San Diego, Calif.; his brother Larry (Carolyn) Rogers of Andover; his niece Doreen Joyce of Kentucky and his nephew Michael Rogers of Florida.
Richard was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles organization. He was an avid fisherman, boating enthusiast and, in his earlier years, a hunter and all-around outdoorsman. Some of his favorite past times were collecting golf balls from a nearby golf course where he would clean and resell these balls, presumably at some points selling them to very golfers that lost them.
He was an experienced and successful gardener, his summer gardens in the back yard were truly a thing of beauty. He was also an accomplished bowler who was passionate about the sport and was well known in the local alleys for his great skill.
Always engaging and ready with a joke, Richard was well known to his neighbors and other members of the surrounding area.
Richard will be greatly missed by his family, but it needs to be noted that he has also left a giant void in the hearts of those who knew him around the community, as he is remembered for his kindness and charitable philanthropic endeavors.
Richard’s family would also like to extend their heartfelt thanks to those passersby, who on that fateful night spotted Richard by the side of the road in the dark. They immediately called 911 and when the ambulance arrived were found to be administering CPR. Richard passed en route to the hospital. Again, all praise to these gallant strangers for their kindness and efforts.
Local arrangements are under the direction of Baker-Swan Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Saturday (June 27, 2020) at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home in Andover with Rev. Philip Barner of the Andover CMA Church officiating. Online condolences may be offered at www. baker-swan.com.
