Elpidio “John” Alvarez, Jr., 59, passed away Tuesday (Nov. 3, 2020) shortly after arrival at Olean General Hospital.
Mr. Alvarez was born on July 1, 1961 in The Bronx to Elpidio and Milagros (Matias) Alvarez. He was a 1979 graduate of Louis D. Brandeis High School in New York City. In 1999, he met Catherine Ann Nappi. Together they have been that rock of stability for each other they so desperately needed these past 21 years.
John worked as a custodian for Metropolitan Hospital in Manhattan for 13 years until leaving in 2013 to become a superintendent for Creative Capital Group in East Orange, N.J. where he oversaw the renovation of apartment complexes.
In addition to Cathy, John is survived by four children, Melanie Alvarez, Lorando Alvarez, John Alvarez and Angel Alvarez; two step-daughters, Cynthia Rivaria and Christina Consuegra; two brothers, Victor Alvarez of Trenton, N.J. and Marcus Alvarez of The Bronx; and one sister, Millie Alvarez of The Bronx.
John was an avid reader. The foundation of his reading was his Bible. Over the years, he lived out his growing faith by his devotion to Cathy. He stayed faithful to Cathy during her difficult years of addiction and demonstrated to her his unconditional love. Together, they forged a relationship built on trust and teamwork. They worked side by side renovating apartments during his time as a superintendent in the construction business. At home they divided their time with the daily chores. He looked after their nine dogs, Cathy cared for their cats. Together, they managed the horses. John was an amazing man and very particular with how a job was performed, even when it came to cleaning the manure left behind from their well-fed horses.
John was very smart and much of his reading was to broaden his ability to enhance his work. He was continually reading “how to” books about construction, electrical, small farm management and anything else he needed to make life work.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Wellsville with Rev. Jim Hartwell of Immaculate Conception Church of Wellsville officiating. Following the service, there will be a time of visitation at the funeral home from 1-4 p.m. Social distancing will be observed and facial masks will be required.
Memorial contributions in John’s name may be made to SPCA Serving Allegany County, 5440 NY-19, Belmont, NY 14813.
