Cynthia Marie “Cindy” Thorp, 56, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 15, 2020 following a long illness.
Ms. Thorp was born on Sept. 21, 1963 in Killeen, Texas to Donald F. and Shirley L. (Vickers) Thorp who survive. She was a 1981 graduate of Andover Central School. She received her Bachelor’s degree in education in 1987 from Mansfield University. She later completed her Master’s degree.
Cindy taught at the college level at the University of Baltimore, Maryland. Locally she was a teacher and student counselor at Alfred State College.
Along with her parents, Cindy is survived by two sisters, Katherine (Tim) Taylor of Bolivar and Debra (Gary) Slade of Elm Valley; two nieces, Brittany (Andy) Cornell of Alfred Station and Courtney (Tom) Demetreu of Weeki Wachee, Fla.; three nephews, Kodi Taylor and Kye Taylor, both of Bolivar, and Keegan (Sarah) Taylor of Portville; three grand-nephews, Conner Cornell, Derek Cornell, and James Demetreu; one grand-niece, Hannah Demetreu; several aunts, uncles, cousins—including two special cousins, Marcy Sisson and Michelle Small, both of Rochester; three dear friends, Markitha, Nora and Rebecca; as well as her ZTA sorority sisters.
Cindy was that aunt who loved having her nieces for sleepovers. She had a larger-than-life smile and a contagious laugh. She relished a good game of just about anything, but particularly Clue and Jeopardy. Among her fondest memories were times spent with family; the Fourth of July including her great pleasure in fireworks and her penchant for the illegal type; and their family trips to the beach at Ocean City.
She was an avid follower of the Minnesota Vikings and the Baltimore Ravens. Cindy was a voracious reader, Joyce Meyers being her favorite author. The symbolism of the peace dove spoke to her heart, representing peace of the deepest kind.
Perhaps Cindy was most influential in the job she loved. She worked with college students helping them manage the transition into higher education and guiding them toward success in their academic lives.
