Marie E. Koehler-Austin, 95, passed away Saturday (Sept. 3, 2016) at Highland Park Nursing Center in Wellsville, following a brief illness.
Mrs. Koehler-Austin was born on March 15, 1921 in Norwood, N.J. to Arthur R. and Anna E. (Burgher) Mills, Sr. She was a 1938 graduate of Closter High School in Closter, N.J. On May 29, 1940, at home, she married Herman A. Koehler, who predeceased her on Nov. 10, 1967. On Oct. 21, 1992, she married Kenneth R. Austin, who predeceased her on July 24, 2010. Marie was a prep cook at Alfred University before switching over to night manager at the Powell Campus Center from 1959-63. Beginning in 1963, Marie and her husband Herman owned and operated the Koehler Friendly Tavern in Andover until their retirement in 1985. Marie is survived by three daughters, June (James) Jennings of Watkins Glen, Elsie (Donald) Swartz of Andover and Kathleen (Richard) Walker of Bradenton, Fl.; one son, Kenneth R. (Karen) Koehler of Andover; one brother, Arthur R. (Barb) Mills, Jr. of Greenwood; fifteen grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Marie had many interests. Outdoors, she loved her gardening and bird watching. On Friday nights, she enjoyed ballroom dancing, especially the waltzes. For an indoor hobby, she used her decorative paints to create earrings and other crafty creations which she would then give to her family and friends. During the winter months, she was a popular participant of the Bradenton Women’s Club with her Florida friends. There will be a time of visitation on Saturday (Oct. 22) from 1-2 p.m. at Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover. The memorial service will be held on Saturday (Oct 22) at the funeral home immediately following the visitation with Rev. Chris Mattison of the Andover Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Marie’s name may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675. |
