Alice O. Salmonson, 98, passed away Saturday (Nov. 14, 2015) at home.
Mrs. Salmonson was born on April 30, 1917 in Olean to Thomas and May (Burdick) Olson. She was a 1934 graduate of Olean High School. On June 14, 1941 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Olean, she married John William Salmonson, who predeceased her on Jan. 28, 1998. Alice worked as a cashier for A&P in Olean where she met her future husband. She later transferred to the A&P in Wellsville where she worked as a cashier and in the meat department. Alice is survived by one daughter, Linda (Robert) Seay of Sun City, Ariz.; three sons, Ronald (Raelene) Salmonson of Wellsville, Gary (Sharon) Salmonson of St. Cloud, Minn. and Marty Salmonson of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Frances Wurtz; 10 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Gail Salmonson; two sisters, Olena and Rosetta; and five brothers, Edward, Peter, Martin, Thomas and Ole. Alice lived a full and busy life. She was active in two bridge clubs and was part of the Monday Club that got together at the library. She loved to travel and counted Israel, Hawaii, the Caribbean and Canada as a few of her many destinations. She was also active in the Red Hats Society. She was very active at St. John’s Episcopal Church where she was a member of St. Anne’s Altar Guild and St. Margaret’s Altar Guild. Additionally, she was the former choir director and lay reader at the church. When she lived in Rochester, she was a member of the Order of St. Luke. There will be no prior visitation. The memorial service will be held on Thursday (Dec. 3) at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Wellsville with Rev. Carol Stewart, officiating. Burial will follow in Allegany Cemetery in Allegany. Arrangements are under the direction of Baker-Swan Funeral Home, 3256 Riverside Drive in Wellsville. Memorial contributions in Alice’s name may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 12 E. Genesee St., Wellsville, NY 14895-1032 or to Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corp., 147 Stevens St., Wellsville, NY 14895. |
