Cornell, 97, passed away Sunday (May 25, 2008) in her home, surrounded by her beloved family. Mrs. Cornell was born on March 15, 1911 in Greenwood; the daughter of Miner and Mary (Williamson) Streeter. In 1916, she moved with her family to the Streeter Farm. In 1928, she was the sole graduate of Greenwood Union School and later attended Alfred University. On Dec. 29, 1931, in Whitesville, she married Lewis Ross Cornell, who predeceased her in 1963. Janette was owner and president of Greenwood Cable TV from 1952-1963. Additionally, she served as Greenwood Town Clerk and worked in the law office of William G. Kellogg for many years. Janette is survived by two daughters, Joanne (Stanley) Holt and Jeanne (Darold) Coddington, both of Greenwood; a daughter-in-law, Evelyn Cornell of Andover; 9 grandchildren, Pam (Steve) Caparco, Laurie Gudgel, Mike (Diane)Fisher, Steve Fisher, Connie Painter, Randy (Ann) Cornell, Karen (Douglas) Maher, Greg (Melissa) Cornell, Susan (Simon) Cieslak; 22 great grandchildren, Melinda Caparco, Cara (Bradley) Sanders, Michelle (Michael) Freeman, Danielle Fisher, Jonathan Fisher, Stephanie Fisher, Joey Fisher, Ryan Smith, Kalen Smith, Jacob Cornell, Shane Cornell, Nicole Cornell, Christopher Barker, Timothy Barker, Amanda Barker, Cassie Cornell, Randohn Cornell, Garrett Cornell, Sarah Cornell, Matthew Pridgeon, Emmylou Cieslak and Benjamin Cieslak; 3 great-great grandchildren; 2 nephews, Robert (Dottie) Streeter and Roger Streeter; grand nephew, Perry (Jeanne) Streeter; grand niece, Jennifer (Daniel) Gehl; and six great grand nephews and nieces. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Clair Cornell and a brother, Marion (Virgil) Streeter. Janette was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and a long time member of the Greenwood United Methodist Church. In 1967 she donated property which allowed the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company to expand. As a descendant of Greenwoods early settlers, Janette was active in genealogical research. In 2005, she took part in a first-of-its-kind Mitochondrial DNA test that conclusively proved her 12-generation matrilineal line of descent from Aeltje Cornelis (Cool) (Van Couwenhoven) Stoothoff (ca. 1615 1683) and inspired an article in the scholarly journal, New Netherland Connections. Janette was deeply loved by her family and the community. Her life was distinguished for her kind acts and helpfulness to others and a great sense of humor. Janette enjoyed going to the lake, planting flowers, taking day trips, and above all, being with her family. She was a model wife, mother and grandmother and will be truly missed by all. There will be no prior visitation. A memorial service will be held at the Greenwood United Methodist Church on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Peggy Knopf officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Janettes name may be made to Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department, 1574 Andover St., Greenwood, NY 14839 or to Greenwood United Methodist Church, Main St., Greenwood, NY 14839. Arrangements are under the direction of Baker-Swan Funeral Home, Andover. |
