William A. “Willie” Monroe, 72, passed away Sunday (Nov. 6, 2016) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, surrounded by family, following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Monroe was born on Aug. 31, 1944 in Buffalo to Carl W. and Edna F. (Joyce) Monroe Pelton. He was a 1963 graduate of Andover Central School. On Nov. 13, 1971, he married Cheryl A. Pelton, who survives. William worked as a welder for Air Preheater in Wellsville from 1973 to 1985. He briefly worked at Kent Farms in Andover driving a potato truck before becoming a custodian at Andover Central School, where he retired in 1995. In addition to his wife of almost 45 years, Willie is survived by a son, Nate (fiancé Wanda Wight) Monroe of Genesee, Pa.; a daughter, Meredith (Efrain) Solis of Rockaway, N.J.; one sister, Janet (Bill) Moulton of Newport, Ky.; five grandchildren, Hayden Solis, Alexa Solis, Cody Wight, Miranda Wight and Sydney Wight; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by an infant son, Carl William Monroe; one brother, Terry Monroe; and one sister, Roslyn Cornell. Willie was an avid hunter and sportsman. In his younger days, he set the Andover Central School record in the shot put, which still stands to this day. He was very proud of his third place finish in the invitational New York State Empire Games in wrestling. Additionally, he was a life member of the NRA. Willie was a huge John Wayne fan. It was widely rumored that Meredith would have carried the John Wayne name if she had been a boy, or the story goes. He was famous for coining many “Willie-isms” and then sprinkling them into his many yarns that he would spin. He had a very unique way of telling a story that would draw in listeners. It seems he had a tale for “every” occasion. His kids still recall in detail the time he frightened them about an impending tornado and the need to “grab a can of beans and head to the basement”. There will be a time of visitation on Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover. The memorial service will be held on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Andover with Rev. Calvin Densmore, officiating. Memorial contributions in Willie’s name may be made to SPCA Serving Allegany County, 1374 NY-19, Wellsville, NY 14895 or to First Baptist Church of Andover, 14 Elm St., Andover, NY 14806. |
